Massage has been shown to reduce joint and muscle stiffness, improve circulation, reduce pain, increase the flow of lymph (improving your immune system) and improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness. It can help to increase flexibility and range of motion, improve posture, reduce anxiety and depression and increase awareness of the mind-body connection. Massage can be a crucial part to your wellness routine, helping you to avoid or recover from injury, keep your tissue healthy and encouraging proper body mechanics.
Massage therapy can be used on its own or in combination with traditional or alternative medical treatments. All prior medical background is gathered before a treatment commences to ensure a safe and positive experience. In addition to being an effective treatment for pain and discomfort, massage therapy can be a great way to let go, relax and to increase your body awareness. People who are physically active, under stressful situations or even sedentary can experience the benefits of a massage treatment.
As a Registered Massage Therapist, Laura is trained in Swedish aka classical or therapeutic massage. The pressure can range from light and soothing in a relaxation treatment to deep and highly specific in a deep tissue treatment. It uses gliding, kneading, rhythmic tapping, frictions and vibrations to achieve its effects. Stretching, joint play, trigger point release, myofascial (connective tissue) release, scar mobilizations and more are also used in this style.
When seeking out a massage therapist, make sure you seek someone who is registered. The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) ensures that all it's members undergo rigorous education and testing with a focus on client safety. Therapists are trained in anatomy, physiology, body mechanics, orthopedic assessment, injury rehabilitation, and much more. Someone who is unregistered may be very skilled but there is a danger that they may not have the knowledge necessary to treat you safely and effectively. You are trusting your body to your therapist, so be discerning. It is important to find a therapist who makes you feel comfortable and is able to answer your health questions, or to refer you to someone who can.
